Sounds Like San Diego: Feb. 28

It's been a few years since Sharon Van Etten's been to San Diego -- and Thursday might be your only chance to see her for a while

I've definitely told this story before, but it's been awhile since the last time I've shared -- it was the last time Sharon Van Etten was in town, and it's been at least a few years since that happened. Sharon was playing this living room show at Habitat House in Golden Hill. The crowd was super excited, but super hushed, with people scattered across the hardwood floors on pillows and blankets and yoga mats, or squished among the few couches in the room. If you're familiar with Sharon Van Etten, it goes without saying that she delivered a stunning performance.

But then this teen girl arrived inebriated, and being a low-key, no security, all-ages house show, nobody really stopped her from coming in. She made her way to the front of the room, between the audience and the piano, and started doing that spinning dance thing you see at Grateful Dead shows. Whispers rose among the crowd, who grew annoyed -- but who's to stop her? Finally, Sharon gently addressed her, telling her that she's distracting not only the crowd but her own performance, and kindly asked her to take a seat or take a hike. I'm not sure if that girl, now a woman all these years later, remembers that night, but I for one, will never forget it.

Don't miss Sharon Van Etten at the Observatory North Park. Her latest record is amazing, and she doesn't come around very often -- and chances are, the new mom won't be back anytime soon.
