Nine shows from Oceanside to Balboa Park


Art galleries are a cheap, sophisticated and fun date idea.

Local artists will be displaying their work in nine galleries all throughout the county on Saturday, February 6. There are shows from Oceanside to Balboa Park showcasing paintings, sculptures, videography, photography and models. That means there is something for everyone and it’s a perfect excuse to get out of the house. Below is a list of galleries you can check out, split up by region:

Central San Diego:

Paradoxes in Video (Hillcrest): This exhibition from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Garage Gallery in Hillcrest features artists that investigate the contradictions between documentary and performance, fact and faction and order and chaos.

Utopian Re-vision (North Park): New School of Architecture students and instructors idealize a utopian re-vision for North Park through art, plans and models. They can be viewed from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Art Produce Gallery in North Park.

Save the Turtles (North Park): This art show at the Thumbprint Gallery in North Park from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. is for the Black Softshell Turtle and all the other endangered species out there in the world. Twenty percent of proceeds go to Born Free USA.

Print Making in the Circle of Rembrant (Point Loma): This symposium feature discussions on "Rembrandt, his pupils and Ferdinand Bol," and other topics from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace in Point Loma.

Another Way of Seeing (Balboa Park): Explore the imaginative sculptures created by Indian artist Sonabai Rajawar and her family during a fifteen-year period of forced isolation. Open all day at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park.

North County:

Hope and Tragedy (Solana Beach): Artist Saphire creates abstract oil, acrylic and mixed media works. Works by Sunna Bohlen and Heidi Rufeh will also be on display in Solana Beach from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ordover Gallery.

Between the Hours (Solana Beach): Subtitled "Mixed Works by Modern Women," this show at Project X in Solana Beach from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. displays work by women who find time to create art amid all of life's demands. Featuring Karina Bania, Sarah Beckman, Heidi Farrow, Jen Martino, Maria Moy, Melissa Nelson and Robin Smith.

Lux Free (Encinitas): This free family-oriented day at the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas offers tours of Iva Gueorguieva's work, live music by Italian jazz guitarist Daniele Spadavecchia and the opportunity to work on a collaborative painting project in the Lux Classroom from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dark Dystopian Future (Oceanside): Meet San Diego artist Greg Brotherton at 2 p.m. at the Oceanside Museum of Art. He will discuss his work, which imagines a dark dystopian future. His work will be on view through March 19, 2010 and the discussion is free with museum admission.
