A magnitude-4.2 earthquake jolted the sea floor off the Southern California coast about 53 miles west of San Diego Friday.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at about 6 p.m. It was centered 38 miles southeast of Catalina.
The USGS reports people in Orange County felt the quake. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Burt Lyon says a volunteer at the Avalon Station on the island also felt it.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.
