Tim Pyles' January Jams

Kick off 2018 with a bang: 91x's Tim Pyles picks the must-see shows in January

Another year has come and gone. Personally, 2017 wasn't the best year -- I feel like we lost too many legends -- but time marches on and stops for no one. That being said, you should go see a show and live in the moment, maybe leave the phone at home. I am involved with a lot of these shows, where I may have booked it, or maybe just hosting -- they are local shows, bands from here, we are from here, we live here, so support the music, art and culture in your sphere. Here are some things you will find me at or that I suggest. See you at a show and trust me, I wouldn't steer you wrong!

Jan. 2: The Shakes, the Heart Beat Trail, Star Jungle at The Merrow. A new local night, hosted by yours truly.

Jan. 3: AJ Croce at the Belly Up. Son of Jim and a local legend in his own right.

Jan. 4: TSOL, Authentic Sellout, Love Canal at the Casbah -- the band who brought us “True Sounds of Liberty.”

Jan. 5: Deadbolt, the Little Richards, the Bassics at the Casbah. “The scariest band in the world” and friends.

Jan. 6: Mrs Magician at Soda Bar. I keep thinking I will never see this band again and then they book a show.

Jan. 7: AJ Froman, Boychick and Color Til Monday at the Casbah. So say I booked this local show at the Casbah, would you go?

Jan. 8: Milky Chance at House of Blues. Did you know they are German?

Jan. 9: Noble War, Slum Summer and friends at the Merrow. Part of the new series I am hosting, featuring local talent.

Jan. 10: The Oxen, Pocket Hole and Sweet Myths at Casbah. Full disclosure: I booked it!

Jan. 11: Egyptian Acid Rock, Stone Horse and XIV at the Casbah. Fuller disclosure: I also booked it!

Jan. 12: Dirty Sweet and Hammered Satin at the Casbah. Bringing back the rock!

Jan. 13: K Flay and Sir Sly at the Observatory North Park. Kristine Meredith Flaherty is her full name.

Jan. 14: Luna and Eleanor Friedberger at the Casbah. Former Galaxie 500 and the Fiery Furnaces, so they got that going for them.

Jan. 15: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Night Beats at the House of Blues. A night of dark psych and post-rock.

Jan. 16: Mustard Plug, Buck O Nine and the Lexicons at the Casbah. Third-wave ska; two from my town.

Jan. 17: Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello at the Belly Up. A benefit for the horses (read all about it here).

Jan. 18: Surfer Blood and Terry Malts at Casbah. What more do you need to know? Just go...

Jan. 19: SoundDiego LIVE at the Casbah featuring the Magnificent, Thee Allyrgic Reaction, Bad Kids and I am your host -- be sure to RSVP here for freebies!

Jan. 20: Beat Farmers Hootenanny at the Belly Up. The Farmers, Wayne Kramer, Sara Petite and Joey Harris -- long live Dick!

Jan. 21: Body/Head at the Casbah. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth is in this band.

Jan. 22: Quel Bordel, BJ Jezbera, Folk Hogan and Forkroot at Casbah. Almost every band features a fiddle.

Jan. 23: Pond and Fascinator at the Casbah, or Wolf Parade and Charly Bliss at the Observatory North Park. Even I can't decide...

Jan. 24: Jessica Lea Mayfield and Sun Seeker at the Casbah. Fun fact: Jessica has worked with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys.

Jan. 25: Hippo Campus at the Casbah. Great indie-rock from Minneapolis.

Jan. 26: Taken by Canadians, Creature and the Woods, and the Bad Vibes at Casbah. An amazing local bill that you should consider supporting.

Jan. 27: St. Vincent at the Observatory North Park. Her new album is called “Masseduction” and it’s badass.

Jan. 28: Reverend Horton Heat, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Big Sandy at the Observatory North Park. Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.

Jan. 29: Pinback at the Casbah. Three nights, starting tonight.

Jan. 30: The Killers at Valley View Casino Center. I love their new song, “The Man.”

Jan. 31: Prawn at Soda Bar. Indie-rock from New Jersey.

Not a bad start to 2018, let's see what the rest of the year holds -- I bet you wait with anticipation until my next calendar! Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!
