ANNUAL GRUNION RUN: If you’re going to head out late at night to catch a glimpse of silvery fish rushing the shore, why not do it in La Jolla? The grunion runs occur from late March through May as the mysterious fish spawn on the beaches north of San Diego.
GET A GUIDE: To make it an even more interesting night, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography provides experts. For $14 per person, you can enjoy the event with naturalists from the aquarium. No doubt you will get more information that you may have thought possible about the process where the female grunion buries herself half-way into the sand to lay eggs while the male wraps himself around her to finish the job.
