Palm Springs Follies’ New Season

The box office opens at one of the desert's sparkliest shows.

Palm Springs Follies

SENIOR SPECTACULAR: The charms of the Palm Springs Follies are unmistakable: sequins and feathers and dance numbers and heartfelt ballads are all part of any of the annual shows. But the fact that a fan is likely to share from the outset is this one: The performers are older than dancers and singers usually found in any other dance or variety show, sometimes decades older. And this is the wonderful thing, of course, because the Follies dancers and showgirls and comedians possess an extra element of excellence that experience and time brings. The Follies site puts it in usually cheeky fashion: The show celebrates "...the music and dance of the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, all performed by a cast old enough to have lived it!" How can you not be won over? We want to see people who know what a song meant in the time it was released perform it; nothing against later singers who interpret a tune years later, of course, but let's hear from the people who heard it on the radio the day it was released.

FOLLIES 2012-2013: The Palm Springs extravaganza is set to roll again for the cold-weather months -- though, in the desert, let's call those "the less hot-weather months" -- starting on November 1 with its new "Dance to the Music" show. Tickets went on sale a few days back, so it is up to you to plan your vacay and select the special guest star you want to see: Lorna Luft, Lou Christie, Lesley Gore, and Mat Plendl will all be taking the stage during various stretches of the upcoming season. Did we also mention our favorite Follies fact? The "Legendary Line of Long-Legged Lovelies" return every year. Heart beating faster. Follies, we love you.
