Curious Humor

A comedian's controversial comeback tour with some can't-miss cohorts.

Funny or Die

BACK AGAIN: Comedian Dave Chappelle abruptly ended his successful career in 2005, despite the huge following he had developed with his stand-up shows and network appearances. Eight years later, he's resurfaced as a headliner for the Funny or Die Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, and not without some controversy. This Sunday, Sept. 15, he'll be making a stop in Irvine in the final weeks of his comeback tour. If his behavior at previous venues is any indicator, you may not want to miss this.

TOUR-ABLE: Billing itself as one of the largest outdoor comedy tours around, the Oddball Festival is about more than just Chappelle's chipper. Co-headlining the event is hilarious musical duo Flight of the Conchords, with additional appearances by noteworthy comedians such as Jeff Ross and Kristen Schaal. The event takes place on two stages and includes an outdoor festival with street performers, vendors, and unnamed curiosities (though "psychics, freaks, and tasty treats" are mentioned). Hosted by Funny or Die, a site created by Will Ferrell and Gary Sanchez Productions, the humor is guaranteed to be well-curated and not suitable for children.

The event takes place at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre beginning at 5 p.m., and tickets are available through Only Official Platinum Seats are available now at over $400 for a pair of tickets, and they will put you at a premium vantage point for the show. Reserved seats for general admission may open up this week at much lower prices, but you'll have to monitor the site for details. Scratch together some funds for a splurge or keep an eye on ticket sales to be a part of comedic history in the making.
