The USS Midway is always the hub for Memorial Day weekend celebrations in San Diego. From performances by legendary rockers to vintage aircraft flybys, expect the deck to be packed with inspiring events and fun activities that honor and remember our heroes as we celebrate our military heritage.

But the lineup doesn't stop there. As if this year's itinerary couldn't get any better, the USS Midway has added two stellar events to the affordable family weekend. Let's take a closer look at what you can expect.

World War II Veterans Remembrance Ceremony
To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion and the Battle of Normandy, World War II veterans will be honored at a family-oriented remembrance ceremony on the flight deck of the USS Midway on Saturday, May 24 at 9 a.m. Both inspirational and educational, attendees will enjoy the opportunity to meet the veterans of the Greatest Generation, watch a vintage World War II aircraft fly over provided by Air Group One and listen to live entertainment provided by the Pomerado Community Band. The Honorable Axel Cruau, Consul General of France in Los Angeles, will be on hand as well, speaking on behalf of the French people and expressing appreciation for the contributions of the Greatest Generation on the beaches of Normandy.

Meet World Famous Cartoonists
As part of their Draw for the Troops initiative, nationally renowned military, social and political cartoonists will be landing at the USS Midway Museum on Sunday, May 25. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., famous doodlers like Jeff Keane (writer/artist behind The Family Circus), Rick Kirkman (co-creator of Baby Blues), Jeff Bacon (retired Navy captain and creator of Broadside and Greenside), Michael Ramirez (two-time Pulitzer prize winning editorial cartoonist), Greg Evans (creator of Luann) and Tom Richmond (best known as one of the “Usual gang of Idiots” at MAD Magazine) will be drawing caricatures of guests (donations for veterans groups encouraged). All cartoonists have served on several international USO tours, and their reunion in San Diego will also include a visit to the Naval Medical Center San Diego to draw for the wounded, injured and ill.

Other events on this fun-filled weekend include a concert with World Class Rockers (featuring members of Journey, Boston and Lynyrd Skynyrd), a meet and greet with aviators, the interactive Discover Zone (perfect for kids) and a flight deck performance by the US Navy Band, plus much more!
