One of San Diego’s top craft brewing companies took the spotlight Tuesday as a prime example of a small, local business that helps the economy by exporting its goods.
In an effort to showcase record-breaking California exports and President Barack Obama’s trade agenda as it pertains to San Diego, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) took a tour of Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits in Miramar to highlight how the San Diego-based brewery business has succeeded through exporting.
The company has been exporting American-made craft beer to multiple Asia-Pacific countries with whom the United States is negotiating a major trade agreement.

Froman visited San Diego to highlight California as a national model for Obama’s trade agenda and its mission to strengthen middle class economics through export, trade and export-related job growth.
In 2014, California exported a record-breaking $174.1 billion of made-in-America goods to the world, supporting nearly one million jobs. Of those exports, $17.9 billion came from the San Diego area.
Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits is a leading local craft brewer known for popular beers such as the India pale ale, Sculpin, and Calico, an amber ale. The company currently operates breweries and tasting rooms out of Miramar, Scripps Ranch and Little Italy, as well as its “Home Brew Mart” and tasting room on Linda Vista Road.
The craft brew company was founded by home brewers Jack White and Pete A’Hearn in the 1990s, in collaboration with Yuseff Cherney, a fellow beer aficionado who became the Home Brew Mart’s first employee.
After their visit to Ballast Point, Froman and Peters were scheduled to visit Solar Turbines Incorporated, a company and Caterpillar subsidiary that’s helping the San Diego economy by exporting industrial gas turbines for oil and gas production and transmission and power generation.
There, they also held a media briefing on Obama’s trade agenda and how trade benefits San Diego.
