Sudberry Properties Breaking Ground on Imperial Beach Retail Center

Breakwater Town Center is located at Palm Avenue and Ninth Street

Developer Sudberry Properties plans a May 5 ground-breaking for Breakwater Town Center, a new shopping center and community hub in Imperial Beach.

A statement from San Diego-based Sudberry said the 45,000-square-foot center, located at Palm Avenue and Ninth Street, has been planned as a public/private partnership between the developer and the city. Completion of the first phase, including 33,000 square feet of retail, is expected in the second half of 2017.

Grocery Outlet has been signed as an anchor tenant at the center, and the developer is in talks with other national and local operators of stores, restaurants and other businesses. Emeryville-based Grocery Outlet has 11 current stores in San Diego County.

Developers said Breakwater Town Center has been in planning for about six years and involves a redevelopment of a 4.75-acre site extending over a three-block area of Palm Avenue. City officials have deemed it β€œan important chapter” in the redevelopment of the city’s central business corridor.
