San Diego Zoo's New Koala Gets a Name

The San Diego Zoo's newest koala now has a name.

More than 4,000 people helped decide the 10-month-old joey’s name by voting on the San Diego Zoo’s website.

No, it’s not Joey.

The name Kirra won with 40 percent of the votes. It means “leaf” in the Aboriginal language.

Zoo keepers say the name is fitting because she started eating eucalyptus leaves at an early age.

Kirra has been the star of the zoo's Koala Cam since January.

She and three others will be moving to the new Conrad Prebys Australian Outback this month.

The exhibit will open to the public on Friday, May 24.
