Preview: What to See in San Diego Theater This Spring 2019

    It's nearly Spring in San Diego County, and that means plenty of wonderful theater to see across the County. 

    From a highly anticipated world-premiere musical to hit Broadway shows on tour to original plays, there are more than a couple must-see shows this season. 

    Here's a roundup of some of the theater you can't miss in San Diego this spring.

    Tiny Beautiful Things (The Old Globe)
    February 9 - March 10 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre 
    Cheryl Strayed's best-selling book comes to life on the Globe stage. The play tells the story of an anonymous advice columnist named Sugar and the readers who ask for her help. The novel was adapted for the stage by Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos, who wrote "Big Fat Greek Wedding." 

    Diana (La Jolla Playhouse)
    February 19 - April 7 at the Mandell Weiss Theatre
    "Diana," a new musical directed by Tony Award-winning Christopher Ashley ("Come From Away" director, Playhouse artistic director), follows Princess Diana in the time leading up to her wedding day. The new, world-premiere musical is perhaps one of the most anticipated in San Diego this year. "Memphis" composers Joe DiPietro and David Bryan wrote the score for the musical. There is a good chance the show will continue on to Broadway. 

    Disney's Aladdin on Tour (Broadway San Diego)
    February 20 - March 2 at the Civic Theatre
    Welcome to Agrabah! The touring cast of Aladin will fly into San Diego. The hit Broadway musical is based is based on the beloved movie. The new musical features brand new music  by Tony and Academy Award winnter Alan Menken written especially for the musical. 

    Pop Tour 2019: Light Years Away
    March 9 - 10 across San Diego schools, with two public performances
    La Jolla Playhouse's Pop Tour travels across San Diego County presenting theater to younger audiences. Before each performance, a teaching artist will engage with students through a workshop. This year, the tour will present a play that takes place in 2068, when three fifth graders take on the challenge of living on a new inhabitable planet named YOLO 6. The piece is interactive: audiences will decide who gets to go to YOLO. There will be public performances of the piece on March 9 and 10, but the work will be touring San Diego schools starting January 30 until the end of March. 

    Life After (The Old Globe)
    March 22 - April 28 at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage
    Start your spring off with the American premiere of this new musical. The musical, with book, music and lyrics by Britta Johnson, follows a 16-year-old who begins to question the events surrounding her father's death. The Globe's Barry Edelstein directions. 

    Cats (Broadway San Diego)
    April 16 to April 21 at the Civic Theatre
    Let the memory live again! The Broadway classic, "Cats," comes to San Diego after its Broadway run. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical features all new choreography, costume design and choreography. 

    Sweat (San Diego Rep)
    April 18 to May 12 at the Lyceum Stage
    Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning play makes its San Diego debut this spring. The play takes place in Reading, Pennsylvania, one of the poorest communities in America. In that town, a group of close friends that share everything. But when rumors of layoffs spread, their community starts to splinter. Sam Woodhouse directs. 

    They Promised Her The Moon (The Old Globe)
    April 6 - May 5 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre
    The West Coast premiere of this play tells the forgotten story of the thirteen women that trained alongside the famed "Mercury Seven," trained by NASA to become the first U.S. astronauts. Giovanna Sardelli directs. 

    Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factor (Broadway San Diego)
    May 14 to May 19 at the Civic Theatre
    Step into a world of pure imagination when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory debuts in San Diego this spring! The beloved movie, now a new musical, has songs from the original movie -- including "Pure Imagination," "Candy Man" and more -- alongside a brand new score. The story follows Willy Wonka as he opens up his marvelous chocolate factory to a lucky few, including Charlie Bucket.
