From several world-premiere musicals to an adaptation of a popular novel to two hit Broadway shows stopping in San Diego, there are more than a couple must-see shows this fall. 

Here's a roundup of some of the theater you can't miss in San Diego this season. 

September: The Heart of Rock and Roll
Sept. 6 - Oct. 21, 2018, at The Old Globe's Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage
The world premiere of "The Heart of Rock and Roll" opens The Old Globe's season this fall. The musical, inspired by the iconic music of Huey Lewis and the News, follows guitarist Bobby as he puts down his guitar to pursue a 9 to 5 job and normal life. The new musical has been in the works for more than eight years, and it's making its debut in San Diego. The highly anticipated musical hopes to get to Broadway, and audiences will get to see it first in San Diego. Get tickets here

September: Fun Home
Sept. 6 to Sept. 30, 2018, at the San Diego Rep's Lyceum Stage
"Fun Home," a new musical based on Alison Bechdel's graphic novel of the same name, makes its San Diego premiere this fall. The piece explores Alison's life as a young girl, a college student and an adult - and her relationship with her father. September: Hundred Days
Sept. 22 - Oct. 21 at La Jolla Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Forum
"Hundred Days" comes to La Jolla after a successful New York run, and it's the last La Jolla Playhouse production before the highly anticipated staging of "Diana." The New York Times critic's pick blends the live theater and the live concert experience in a 90-minute piece with no intermission. The show has a book written by The Bengsons and Sarah Gancher and features music and lyrics by The Bengsons. Get tickets here.

September: Young Frankenstein
Sept. 28 - Oct. 28, 2018, at San Diego Musical Theatre's Horton Grand Theatre
The Mel Brooks musical comes to San Diego! Tony-nominated "Young Frankenstein" is based on the original classic comedy film and reimagines the legend of Frankenstein. Get tickets here

October: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Oct. 2 - 7, 2018 at the San Diego Civic Theater 
The popular jukebox musical about the life and career of Tony and Grammy Award-winning artist and singer Carole King returns to San Diego this October. The feel-good musical features many songs audiences will recognize as they tell King's story, including "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "Chains," "You've Got a Friend" and "A Natural Woman," among others. October: Persuasion
Oct. 5 - Nov. 18, 2018, at Llamb's Players Theatre 
This new musical adaptation of Jane Austen's final novel makes its San Diego premiere at Llamb's Players Theatre this fall. The piece follows the heroine Anna Elliot and her family as they move to lower their expenses and get out of debt. Get tickets here

October: Actually
Oct. 11 - Nov. 4, 2018, at the San Diego Rep's Lyceum Stage
Anna Ziegler's new play "Actually" explores what happened the night between two college freshman who hooked up at a party one night, and the accusations made following the hookup. Get tickets here

October: Wicked
Oct. 31 - Nov. 25, 2018 at the San Diego Civic Theater
It's the Broadway sensation audiences love time and time again. "Wicked" returns to the San Diego Civic Theater this fall after several years, this time for nearly a month. The story takes a look at what happened in Oz, from a different angle, long before Dorothy arrived. You'll immediately recognize the most iconic song from the show, "Defying Gravity," - but you'll also know many of the other songs from the popular musical. Tickets available here.
