Pearl Jam Named 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors

Pearl Jam have been officially announced as 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors

"Spin the black circle," indeed! 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Pearl Jam are betting big on circular slabs o' wax this year: The famed Seattle band has been formally announced as the 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors!

The group (led by frontman Eddie Vedder -- onetime San Diegan, avid Cubs fan and actual owner of the Casbah if one particular local legend holds true) has been a champion of the format since its inception in 1990.

With more than 85 million albums sold over the last three decades, along with a gazillion live releases and a penchant for issuing limited-edition vinyl collectibles to fanclub members (until very recently), Pearl Jam is more than an appropriate choice to lead this year's biggest vinyl-centric holiday on Saturday, April 13. In a press release, band guitarist Mike McCready explained his and the band's affinity for the medium.

"Pearl Jam is honored to be Record Store Day’s Ambassador for 2019," he said. "Independent record stores are hugely important to me, and have been ever since I was 12 years old. Before I even really knew what they were -- there was a certain feeling of 'this is a dream come true,' and it's a wonderland and there's so much to learn in here … and it's still that way.

"Support every independent record store that you can," he continued. "They're really a good part of society. Know if you love music, this is the place to find it. And it helps people who work here and that's important, too. And it kind of takes an effort, you have to look for something that you want; you have to talk to people. I had to talk to people to figure out which Aerosmith record to get first or anything back in the day. It's a place to learn. It's a place to have fun. And it's a place to discover new music. Come out on Record Store Day, but also make it Record Store Year."

Pearl Jam's selection as official RSD ambassadors follows Run the Jewels, St. Vincent, Metallica, Dave Grohl, Chuck D, Jack White and others chosen in years prior. Upcoming RSD titles will be announced soon but while you're waiting, why not check out Pearl Jam's latest single, "Can't Deny Me" -- which, if all goes according to plan, should be included on the band's upcoming 11th studio album.

Local shops that routinely take part in RSD include Cow Records, FeeLIT Records, Folk Arts Rare Records, Lou's Records, M-Theory Records, Normal Records, Re-Animated Records, Record City, Spin Records and Taang! Records.
