Little Italy to Light Poinsettia Christmas Tree

The Christmas Village celebration runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at W. Fir, between Columbia Street and Kettner Boulevard

San Diego’s vibrant Little Italy community will celebrate the holiday season with the lighting of a very special public centerpiece this weekend: a 25-foot tree made of more than 1,100 bright, red poinsettias.

The Little Italy Association will host its 16th Annual Little Italy Tree Lighting & Christmas Village event on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at W. Fir, between Columbia Street and Kettner Boulevard. The lights on the tree will be switched on at 5:30 p.m. sharp at the Piazza Basilone – more than 2,000 lights, to be precise.

The festive gathering will include Santa Claus riding into Little Italy at 4 p.m. on Little Italy Fire Engine 3. Jolly St. Nick will then take photos with kids through 6:30 p.m.

Organizers say the family-friendly event will include an arts and crafts area for kids, with activities presented by Washington Elementary STEAM Magnet School and ArtReach.

Vendors will also line the streets, and attendees can get some holiday shopping done at the Little Italy Mercato while enjoying live performances by carolers and Washington Elementary School students. Of course, seasonal goodies, including snacks and beverages will also be available for purchase.

This community event is free to attend. For more info, click here.

Buon Natale!
