Where San Diego's Desert Once Met Hollywood

Off the beaten path, you'll find a spot where a very popular series came to an explosive end in an area called Tectonic Gorge.

Explosive Ending:  You can't get there on foot but you can get there on two or four wheels - provided they go off-road. Tectonic Gorge is where "The X-Files" cast and crew recorded the 2002 series finale. You'll find the exact spot while exploring the trails within the Ocotillo Wells Vehicular Recreation Area in Imperial County. If roaming the desert on your own isn't something you'd like to do, there are tours of the park during the winter season. Call (760) 767-5370 for more information.

Salton Sea: Drive just a few miles east and you'll reach the Salton Sea where more than a few celebrities once spent time. In the 1950s, the resort area served as a playground for the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Now, of course, the water is saltier than the ocean. While great for boating and bird watching, you'd be hard-pressed to find any of Hollywood's elite vacationing here. That means more room for you in the campgrounds around the lake. To reserve a spot, call (800) 444-7275.

Free Under the Stars: If you are looking to camp, what better place than Holmes Camp? The views are spectacular, there are no quiet hours and the price is right - free! The land was once the homestead of a local turkey rancher. Now, it's popular with campers in part because of the shade from some tamarisk trees. Bring the food and water you'll need (it IS the desert), wood for a fire and quarters for the showers. The best time of year to visit is in the winter months.
