For a Unique Summer Activity in San Diego, Rent a Yacht!

The most expensive yacht sold by the company was $1 million

People travel from all around the world to visit San Diego's coastline and the summer is prime time for businesses selling or renting high-end, luxury boats.

Let's be honest, most of us don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a yacht. Renting one is a great alternative and a unique way to spend the day.

"A yacht is a sailboat in the 40-plus foot range," said Kennan Hirsh, Vice President of Harbor Sailboats in San Diego.

For some, summer sailing in San Diego is standard. Hirsh said on the Fourth of July, hundreds of boats float in the marina and harbor.

"Right now business is very good," said Hirsh. "There are hundreds of boats sold each year in San Diego."

Hirsh took an NBC 7 crew out on a 45-foot sailboat Thursday. He estimated the boat's value at about $550,000.

In May, the median home price was $570,000 up from $529,750 in May 2017, according to CoreLogic.

Given the cost of housing in San Diego, some people in the county choose to live on their boats.

Hirsh added the most expensive boat his company had sold was about $1 million. It had four bedrooms, three bathrooms and push buttons that made most of the boat automated.

"It costs about $600,000 or $700,000 just to make a boat like that," Hirsh added.

The company has about 40 boats for rent from $50 for a 24 hour period to $1,200 a day.

Anyone considering owning a boat should take into consideration the cost of docking the boat in a local marina. Those monthly fees can range from several hundred dollars to more than $1,000 depending on the size of the vessel.
