Come together: Beatlemania will be in full force on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center during an all-day celebration known as the San Diego Beatles Fair.
The annual event -- now in its 10th year! -- revolves around all things related to the Fab Four including, of course, lots and lots of live music. It runs from noon to 11 p.m. at the North Park all-ages venue, located at 3925 Ohio St.
You could say the fair's organizers are getting by with a little help from their friends: Scheduled performances include Blac Rabbit (a pyschedelic-rock band from Brooklyn, who were discovered playing Beatles songs on the NYC subway); local Beatles cover outfits the Bajabugs, and the Nowhere Men; San Diego '60s/'70s-inspired rock/pop band True Stories; and Revolution Band, a Tijuana-based Beatles tribute group from Tijuana.
'Paperback writers' assemble, too: John Borack, music journalist and author of "John Lennon: Life Is What Happens," will be on-hand as a guest speaker while Mark Brickley, author of the memoir "Postcard From Liverpool: Beatles Moments & Memories," will lead a PowerPoint presentation titled "The Beatles' Road to Stardom." It "traces the Beatles' musical legacy from their 1956 Liverpool skiffle band roots through the group's 1964 televised performances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' ... It includes the author's original photos of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and members of the band's milieu, rare Beatles photography, in-concert video clips and the band's early recordings." The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with Brickley, an optional book signing and discussion on the band.
'You never give me your money,' but maybe you'll part with it for some special collectibles: Besides music, the San Diego Beatles Fair will include a rock & roll marketplace, memorabilia displays, art and records, as well as one-of-a-kind handmade items created by local vendors. Last year, fair attendees may remember seeing the band's drummer before Ringo, Pete "The Fifth Beatle" Best, live and in person as he performed, signed autographs and answered questions at the fest. SoundDiego caught up with him before the event and he gushed about the fair.
"[Fans] can expect to have a great time. See a fun show. Share some warmth and love. Knowing what to expect, if I wasn't on the show, I'd go to it myself," Best told us. Take it from the former Beatle himself -- Queen Bee's is the place to be on Dec. 7.
