Food Truck Fridays Ride Again at Balboa Park

The summer event brings more than a dozen food trucks to the heart of the landmark every Friday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., through Sept. 29

If you’re visiting Balboa Park on a Friday evening this summer, you may want to come hungry – and ready to splurge on a treat or two.

For the second year, “Food Truck Fridays” return to the San Diego landmark, a summer series that brings more than a dozen food trucks to the Plaza de Panama and El Prado walkway every Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The weekly event kicks off this Friday and runs through Sept. 29. The food trucks rotate on a weekly basis.

On opening night, the tasty lineup includes: Tacos La Mezcla; Mastiff Sausage; Seoul Man; Marcel Belgium Waffles; Taber BBQ; Born in Brooklyn; Devilicious; Currywurst; Frankfurt; Super Q; Two for the Road; New Orleans Cuisine & Catering; Sicilian Breeze; Lil’ Miss Shortcakes.

As visitors grab some food, they’ll also be treated to live entertainment (with an opportunity to cut a rug, of course) and family-friendly activities at the park, many hosted by various Balboa Park organizations.

The opening night performance will showcase more than two dozen students from the School of Creative & Performing Arts, under the direction of Dr. John Reynolds.

Later in the summer, on June 30 and Aug. 25, the Gator by the Bay/Bon Temps Social Club will perform with a 10-piece band. There will be a dance floor, as the group is known to bring down the house.

Food Truck Fridays draw a lot of families to Balboa Park. Many bring blankets or lawn chairs and eat their food truck hauls on the grass while enjoying the evening under the stars. It’s also an easy idea for a date night.

Organizers set up a little area in Plaza de Panama dubbed the “living room,” which includes an artificial lawn for the kids to play on, a giant checkers set and oversized bean bags.

The program is a collaborative effort of the Balboa Park Conservancy and the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department.

While checking out the food truck event, visitors may also want to stick around for “Balboa Park After Dark,” another cool summer series that goes down after sunset every Friday, offering special nighttime deals and attractions.
