Stewart Takes Aim at Ryan's Soup Kitchen Photo-Op

“Do you know how hard it is to make volunteering at a homeless shelter look like a negative thing?”

Election Day couldn’t come sooner for “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart.

The late-night host kicked off Wednesday’s episode by lamenting the ongoing campaign stops leading up to the presidential elections, pointing to GOP vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan’s recent soup kitchen run-in as a case in point.

“Do you know how hard it is to make volunteering at a homeless shelter look like a negative thing?” Stewart asked rhetorically.

Ryan was campaigning in Youngstown, Ohio over the weekend and decided to volunteer at a soup kitchen, where he was photographed washing pots.

Only, the head of the charity made headlines for saying those pots had already been cleaned. Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, later revised his original statement, which he said was based on secondhand information. Antal said Ryan did wash some dirty dishes, but only after his team “ramrodded their way” into the building.

“You broke into a homeless shelter to take a picture of you maybe or maybe not washing already clean dishes!” Stewart ranted.

Stewart proceeded to chide Ryan for trying to “manipulate people’s emotions through pre-fabricated scenarios,” and even encouraged him to “put some oomph” into his staged events.
