"History is thrilled to embark on this new adventure. As a network, we are always seeking groundbreaking ways to tell stories - our vision is to own history everywhere. Given the enormous appeal and success of historically-based scripted series, it is a logical next step for us," said Nancy Dubuc, president and general manager of the network.

"The Kennedy family, from every angle, has always fascinated our viewers - they have touched so many key moments in history and are one of the most iconic families in the world," Dubuc continued.

The producers promise "The Kennedys" will chronicle the saga of the most fabled political family in American history, told in a manner similar to "The Godfather." The producers also say the mini-series will show the Kennedys not as mythic figures but as human beings capable of greatness on a grand scale and all-too-human frailty on a private one.

Executive Producer Joel Surnow developed the series with Asylum Entertainment's Jonathan Koch and Steve Michaels for Muse Entertainment Enterprises who is producing the series in association with Asylum. Steve Kronish will write the screenplays for the series and Jon Cassar has been set to direct.
