Fans, Detractors React to Justin Bieber Arrest, Mug Shot on Twitter

The news of Justin Bieber's arrest on suspicion of DUI and drag racing in Miami Beach early Thursday sent fans and detractors into a Twitter frenzy.

According to police, the pop star admitted to consuming alcohol and prescription medications and smoking marijuana. Bieber was driving a rented yellow Lamborghini. The officer who made the arrest said the car was going approximately 55 to 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.

On Twitter, Beliebers were quick to jump to the pop star's defense with many seemingly unable to grasp the notion that the tween hearthrob had in fact been jailed. Others, less shocked by the reports, wrote of their surprise that it had not happened sooner. And the reaction to Bieber's grinning mug shot drew comments of disbelief and mirth.

"Guys I will die if Justin goes to jail...this can't be happening please someone wake me up from this nightmare," Diana (@jdrewbiebssz) tweeted.

@Justinismyboy wrote: "I don't defend him for the stuff he does wrong, but I won't leave him"

"RT if you will be with Justin forever and ever," said @jdbchickz.

Belieber @MyCanadianSide attempted to explain the reason behind the wide grin on the "Baby" singer's mugshot: "The only reason Justin Bieber smiled in the mugshot was bec he knew that all of us would see it and he wanted to pretend as if he was okay"

Many Twitter users expressed surprise such an occurance hadn't happened sooner:

Ultimately, it was Bieber's smiling mug shot that continued to keep the baby-faced crooner atop the Twitter trending list:

"justin bieber the boy who doesnt smile in meet and greets but smiles in his mugshot," wrote Sarah (@naturallydrews)
