“I've Been Called a Lot Worse”: Dick Pope Responds to Academy President's Oscar Flub

It wasn't until hours later that he realized he was the butt of an unintentional joke.

Dick Pope said he was not bothered "in the slightest" by having his name mangled during Thursday's Oscars nominations.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president, mispronounced Pope's name — calling him Dick Poop — when announcing his nomination for best cinematography for the film "Mr. Turner."

Isaacs immediately corrected herself after realizing the mistake, though social media lit up with users quick to call out the #dickpoop gaffe (Check out some of the tweets below).

Pope, 67, told The Los Angeles Times he was on a private tour of London's Tate Museum during the Oscars announcement. It wasn't until hours later that he realized he was the butt of an unintentional joke.

"If that's what people talk to each other about on [Twitter], I would never be on it," Pope told the Times. "Not if that's the level of intelligent conversation."

But he said that he has "been called a lot worse in my time," and felt for Isaacs over the flub.

"It doesn't bother me in the slightest. But the poor president of the academy must feel terrible about making the slip-up. It was 5:30 in the morning," Pope said.

The academy has not responded to a request for comment.
