“The Voice” Contestant Anthony Riley Dies at 28

Anthony Riley, a contestant on NBC’s hit show "The Voice," has passed away at the age of 28, NBC confirmed in a statement Sunday.

"We are sad over the passing of Anthony Riley," an NBC spokeswoman wrote. "We offer our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this very difficult time."

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Riley took his own life in Philadelphia and was found dead Friday in the basement of an apartment in Center City where he was staying.

Riley was a performer on Season 8 of “The Voice” but abruptly left the show in March. Riley, who was coached by Pharrell Williams, claimed he was dealing with substance abuse and returned to the city to enter rehab.

Riley was born and raised in Philly and became inspired to pursue a career in music after his mother died when he was 19-years-old. Riley gained fame for his local street performances. Philly Magazine named him the city’s best street performer in 2014.

Officials have not yet revealed an exact cause of death.
