There's a new thunder from down under about to hopefully hammer home Hollywood's next super hero hit – Chris Hemsworth!
The Aussie actor, who is currently starring in J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" as Captain Kirk's father George Kirk, is in final talks with Marvel Studios to play Thor in the big screen adaptation of the story of the Norse God of Thunder, Variety reported.

The story of Thor centers on the legendary warrior son of the God Odin, who is banished to earth in the body of a human. He uses a massive hammer, called Mjolnir, which is virtually unbreakable and allows Thor to control rain, thunder and lightning. According to Marvel, if Thor is separated from his mighty hammer for more than 60 seconds he reverts back to his mortal form.
Not only would the 25-year-old play the God of Thunder in his own feature, but he would also reprise the role in "The Avengers," with fellow super heroes Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America.

The Aussie actor also stars in MGM's upcoming "Cabin in the Woods," and was also cast in the studio's remake of "Red Dawn," playing Jed Eckert, the role first played by Patrick Swayze in 1984.

Kenneth Branagh is directing the movie, which is set to debut on May 20, 2011.
In more Hemsworth casting news, Chris' younger brother, Liam, has just been cast opposite Miley Cyrus in "The Last Song," based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
