Nicolas Cage is in talks for the role of a gangster baddie, Variety reported. He would face off against Seth Rogen, who will star in the film's title role.

Cameron Diaz was previously reported as being in talks for the role of Rogen's love interest in the film.

It would be the latest comic book film for Cage, who recently wrapped filming the violent teen hero picture "Kick-Ass" and played the flame-headed title character in 2007's "Ghost Rider."

In an interview with MTV News, Rogen said they'd had to come up with an original villain for the film.

"There was no classic ['Green Hornet'] villain, so we had to create a villain," he said, adding that the role wouldn't be a comedic one. "[He's] not over-the-top. We wanted him to be very scary. We don't feel that that's where the comedy in the movie should come from, necessarily."

Rogen, who couldn't confirm the casting reports, said the film was currently in "heavy pre-production." It's due in theaters next July.
