Glam Slam: Chop, Chop!

Eva Longoria Parker, Hayden Panettiere and Reese Witherspoon have all recently chopped their long locks into short bobs.

The cut continues to be big for Fall, but there’s a new bob in town. It’s not chin-length; it’s longer and hits the collarbone. While this length hasn’t been considered stylish since the ‘70s, Frederick Fekkai/Melrose Place Stylist Adir Abergel says stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway are proving it to be extremely chic.

“This cut can emphasize neck and shoulders and create beautiful lines,” says Adir.

Gone are the tough, edgy bobs like the ones Posh and Rihanna perfected. Adir says clients should ask for a choppier bob. The long bob can become soccer mom-ish if it is too blunt without modernizing the texture of the ends, so make sure your stylist removes some bulk from your hair and chops into the ends. Request long layers that frame the face.

Whether cutting hair this length, or letting a shorter cut grow out — this is a softer look. Adir says the key is to lose the straightening iron for a curling iron. This is how he created Anne Hathaway’s wavy do at the Toronto Film Festival.

Use a volumizer like Fekkai Coiff Shape and Set Mist all over roots of damp hair. You can also use a beach spray to modernize texture. Dry hair upside down to create fullness.

Next, wrap hair around a 1” curling iron. Make sure you leave the ends loose, which creates a relaxed curl. And voila — the softer bob!
