Documents cite "irreconcilable differences"

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

The split, first reported by TMZ.com, was verified by documents the site posted online. The couples' rep issued a statement on their behalf to People magazine.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the statement read. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

The documents, filed in L.A., show she's asking for joint custody of their 2-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli. Wentz, the 31-year-old bass player for rock band Fall Out Boy, and Simpson, 26, the singer and sister of Jessica Simpson, married in May, 2008. Simpson's father, Joe Simpson, officiated the wedding.
