Mo’olelo is the Hawaiian word for “story, legend, tale, or narrative.” A fitting title for the Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company, which prides itself on working to broaden the scope of public awareness. To create, produce, and educate are the core values of the Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company of San Diego; all three of which are seen incorporated within all facets of this open-minded, socially-conscious, professional theater. Through these diverse performances, the Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company is able to not only raise awareness for these underrepresented populations, but further generate a participatory dialogue amongst the members of our community. Co-Founder, Seema Sueko, has single-handedly shaped this theater as a progressive community for the arts, welcoming up-and-coming directors and playwrights from all backgrounds alike. Through giving life to these lesser-known tales of different communities on stage, the Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company is widely praised for uncovering the truths often left out of mainstream American theater. The theater has been highly recognized through numerous honors and distinctions, such as recipient of the 2011 National Theater Company Grant through The American Theater Wing. The theater’s line-up this season all share the common recognition of diversity in many different walks of life. Productions include: “Toni Morrions’ The Bluest Eye” adapted by Lydia Diamond and directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, “Extraordinary Chambers” written by David Wiener and directed by Seema Sueko and “The Amish Project” written and directed by Jessica Dickey.
