    Monica Dean is an Emmy award winning journalist for NBC 7 News. You can now see Monica anchoring NBC 7 News at 4 and 5PM with Catherine Garcia and Mark Mullen.

    Monica joined the NBC7 news team in June 2004. Monica is the co-anchor of the NBC7 News at 4 & 5PM. Monica reported for NBC7 News in the Morning for many years and helped pioneer the “Live Desk” bringing live breaking news reports to San Diego’s early morning viewers. Some of her most memorable reports came from the Live Desk.  Some of her most memorable reports came from the San Diego Firestorms of October 2007 where she delivered continuous live reports from the fire lines.  In 2006 Monica won her first Emmy for her report on the migrant worker camps in Carmel Valley.   She was also awarded an Emmy for team coverage of the 2007 Firestorms. 
    Monica came to San Diego from Bakersfield, Calif., where she anchored the weeknight 6, 10 and 11PM newscasts for KBAK/KBFX-TV, the CBS and FOX affiliates. While she was there the Associated Press Television-Radio Association named Monica "The Best Television Spot News Reporter" in 2004.  Monica received three Awards of Excellence from the Kern Press Club in 2003 and 2004 for best reporting series, best light feature and best serious feature.
    Monica Dean has lived and worked all over the world, but California has always been her home. Monica grew up in San Diego, the daughter of a Navy Captain and local dental hygienist.  During her childhood, Monica was actively involved in San Diego Junior Theater and graduated from University of San Diego High School. 
    Monica earned her bachelor's degree in English from the University of California at Los Angeles. She began her news career in Los Angeles as a news desk assistant at KTTV FOX 11 News, where she also assisted in the production of several Emmy-nominated half-hour special reports.  Monica went on to earn her master's degree in journalism from the prestigious Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago where she was awarded that school's highest honor, "The Harrington Award," for excellence in achievement and for highest promise in broadcast journalism.
    Monica got her first on-air reporting job as the Washington D.C. political correspondent for WCAX, the CBS affiliate in Burlington, VT. While in the Nation's Capital Monica was also the television health reporter for an eight-station news group stretching across the United States.
    Monica's career has included radio reporting for WKVT-AM in Brattleboro, Vt.; newspaper reporting for the daily newspaper of Hilton Head, S.C.; writing and producing for the online broadcast news Web site
    Monica has lived and worked all over the world, but is happy to be settled back home in San Diego.  Monica is married and has three young children.  She and her family make their home in Scripps Ranch.  Monica loves being a mom and is actively involved in her children’s lives.  She's also involved with a number of community organizations including The Red Cross, Operation Homefront, Children's Hospital and Christian Media Fellowship.  Monica enjoys traveling, singing, exercising, swimming, jewelry making and photography.
