United Way Day of Action 2012

San Diego leaders unite to keep kids reading this Summer

Substantial reading time is lost during the summer months for low-income children who do not own books to read at home. Each year, across the country on Day of Action,  United Way invites people to get involved in causes they care about. This year, United Way of San Diego will help families in the community who cannot afford summer reading books for their kids. UWSD purchased 21,500 bilingual books for low-income children. Children up to age five will receive “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”/”La Oruga Muy Hambrienta” and children ages five to nine will receive “Farmer’s Market”/ “Dia de Mercado".  San Diego County's Day of Action will take place on Thursday, June 21st from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. UWSD President and CEO Doug Sawyer, along with 30 San Diego business leaders will assemble 5,000 colorful book kits to be distributed to 35 organizations throughout San Diego County. The book kits will also include a personalized note written to inspire each of the kids, and to encourage the love of reading.
