"The Wizard of Oz" Hotels

SOMEWHERE OVER THE CULVER: It feels as if the movie version of "The Wizard of Oz" has been with us for so long, maybe forever, but it is, in fact, only turning 71 on Thursday, Aug. 12. (Even Google is taking note.) And while you could and should watch the film to celebrate, there are two stays around Southern California, plus a quick stop by a former inn, that summon a certain gingham-favoring gal and her pals.

THE CULVER: Yeah, we've sung its praises before. It's the MGM-close hotel where the actors who Munchkin'd-it-up stayed during the filming. Check out the Culver's front windows, to see a tableau from the movie. Culver City

HOTEL DEL CORONADO:L. Frank Baum was an excellent storyteller -- he wrote "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" -- but he had an eye for design, too. He famously designed the famous chandeliers inside the famous hotel's famous Crown Room. If we could add one more "famous" we would. Coronado Island

WESTERN HOTEL: You can't stay at the Lancaster-located Western any longer, but you can see Judy Garland's footprints in the back patio. The actress and her family called the area home for a spell.
