Party in the Back

California classics with a rear end that collectors go crazy for.

HOT ROD: Summers were made for cruising, and cruising was made for awesome cars. While the season is full of opportunities for hot-rod spotting, no car show says San Diego like the annual Wavecrest Woodies Meet. Touted as the largest gathering of Woodies in the world, this year's event takes place Sept. 21 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.

YOU WOOD TOO: The term "Woodie" is a nickname given to vehicles that have rear bodywork constructed of wood. This design was often incorporated into station wagons or other long-bodied vehicles of the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's, and they generally gained most of their popularity along the west coast. This model became especially desireable amongst surfers due to its roomy build, airy compartment, and cheaper price tag. Today, Woodies are an unmistakable part of California surf culture and a charming segment of classic car collecting.
