Mondo Free Museum Day in Our Capital City

Here's your chance to visit several prominent Sacramento spots, without paying a thing.

A FREE MUSEUM DAY... is forever and always a Truly Grand Thing, wherever it so benevolently happens to pop up. It's rare, but not totally rare, as some institutions waive admission on the last Thursday of the month or every Monday night. It's a gem of an outing, because you just might see a painting that thrills you or a document that deepens your knowledge of a major historical event. And it can overwhelm, especially if the museum holding the free day has a complex collection or is, let's be real, especially big, as so many museums can be (and wonderfully so). How, then, to approach a Free Museum Day that includes over two dozen amazing and info-packed destinations? And what if many of those museums took on topics of a California-focused nature? Well, you'd probably be in...

SACRAMENTO, and the date would be Saturday, Feb. 2, which just happens to be the date for the Free Museum Day that's just ahead for 2019. And so many places that deal specifically with fascinating swaths of Golden State history will be on the line-up, that anyone seeking to add to their California knowledge may feel a tad overwhelmed. The Aerospace Museum of California, the California Automobile Museum, the California State Library, and the California State Railroad Museum are all on the lengthy list, as are oodles of other gotta-see-that places. The Powerhouse Science Center, the Folsom History Museum, and several other spots are also on the mind-growing, spirit-buoying roster. How to choose where to focus your attention and time? Oh golly. You best start pondering now, way before arriving in Sactown.

ONE MORE PLUS? Well, there are so many, but if you show a SacRT Museum Day flyer, you'll be able to enjoy "free rides on all buses and light rail trains on Saturday, Feb. 2." Find more info about that, and the flyer you need (one per family is fine), right here.
