Everyone's Royalty at Puppy Prom

The hounds'll gather to help other animals, on the Sunday after Cinco de Mayo.

A QUEEN AND HER RUFF: If you were to picture a queenly figure, a figure with plenty of nobility and elegance and charm, and you also pictured a ruff at the same time, might you imagine a queen wearing a ruff? Like a queen might have donned in the days of the Renaissance? The elaborate lacy, stacked-high collars were once quite the fashion, clothing-wise, centuries ago. But ruffs are still around, as in the kind that dogs give — bark bark — and, occasionally, when a pup is crowned queen, as in prom queen, well, ruffs and queens have a way of reuniting. Which is all leading to the incredibly cute fundraiser that's trotting for Casa Sol y Mar in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center in San Diego on the first Sunday in May. It's a money-raising event for the Helen Woodward Animal Center, in Rancho Santa Fe, but you'll want to head for Casa Sol y Mar, and not the center, to have your pup take part in the prom. That's right, it is time again for...

PUPPY PROM, and all alumni from the center are welcome to take part in the free and furry happening. Because it is happening on Sunday, May 6, the day after a certain lively occasion, count on a Cinco de Mayo theme, complete with complimentary chips and salsa for the humans and a Puppy Prom Punch, which will be $4.95 a glass (this is also for the people, not the pups). A corsage station (make one for your hound), prom photos, and the crowning of the king and queen are all part of the free day. And while it is free, note that "(p)roceeds from best dressed contest, opportunity drawings, and donations support the Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Department." If you can't make Puppy Prom, but you love supporting this community-involved center's mission, you can donate or help out on your own schedule. Ruff ruff, which is dog-ese for click here.
