Azzul Monraz and Madame Ur are two different women. Azzul is a nerd, mother and wife, while her alter-ego is a fearless goddess of song. Giving birth to a son gave her a profound moment of clarity and that's when she promised herself, “I will do everything I can to get closer to love and happiness.”
In 2006, that promise gave her the courage to conjure up the woman who had always been inside her: Madame Ur – a soulful, enchanting, cabaret-jazz songstress who will “wah-wah” you using her voice and hand as an instrument. You'd think she was actually muting a trumpet – an intentional design to keep you in a trance. Watch her video for “Venada.”
Why the name Madame Ur?
“I like my name Azzul Monraz,” the born-and-raised-til-she-dies Tijuanera explains. “But what happens if I have another name, a name that everyone in every language can say. That's what I thought. I like the name Ur. It's an ancient city in Mesopotamia. I was so impressed how two letters can make that sound ---oooooooRRRRRR.”
No one can roll the 'R' sound better than the chanteuse Madame Ur.
Fast forward to today, and Madame Ur has found a band to muse with. They have released their debut album, Animal Man, under the name Madame Ur y Sus Hombres. The first single dropped is “Man.” And man! No pun intended: it's a gut-wrenching ode to all the broken-hearted women who have been duped by a lover.
“It's a female empowerment song, where I accept my imperfect and crazy nature and I ask men to be men,” Madame Ur says.
