In the Kompany of Men

Vokab Kompany make a triumphant return to San Diego following a tour that included multiple appearances at Coachella

It's been a rough past few days here in San Diego, friends. It's hard to think of entertainment and live music at a time when all of our thoughts and hearts are with those affected by the fires. For some, though, the constant news updates can be overwhelming. So for those of you who need to get out of the house and be around friends and family in this difficult time, sometimes music can be the best medicine to get through times like these. If that sounds good to you, then have fun and be sure to stay safe.

On Friday, Nahko and Medicine For the People play a sold-out show at the Belly Up; An Evening with Gary Wilson and Friends (Poontang Clam, Max Daily, Ashley Motoya and DJ Wankchops) takes over Til-Two; Sara Petite is at Java Joes; Through The Roots and New Kingston play at House of Blues; the Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger headlines a sold-out show at the Casbah; Bulletproof Tiger, Soft Lions, Beat Panther and Pal & Drome are at the Hideout; Chess Wars is at the Rivera; and St. Cloud Sleepers (album release), Grizzly Business and Hello Penelope play at the Tin Can. For your dancing fix, Skream headlines at Spin; the Britrock dance party F***ing In The Bushes with DJs Daniel Sant and Rob Moran hits The Whistle Stop; 2ToneDisco and Showpan are at Bang Bang; and El Puro Party with Wiley Jay and Adam Salter takes over El Camino.

Saturday, the North Park Festival of Arts goes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on University Avenue between 30th and 32nd Street. It’s free and features five music stages, with live performances by School of Rock; Oh, Spirit; the New Kinetics; the Creepy Creeps; and Hills Like Elephants. Grab more info here. It’s also the kick off of Dive Day Club at Harrah’s with 3Lau. Later that night, Vokab Kompany plays at the Belly Up; the Down Family and Old Man Markley are at Soda Bar; Holly Golightly and The Broke-Offs, The Loons and Hong Kong Fuzz are at The Casbah; Wha? (members of Beehive & the Barracudas and Long & Short Of It) headlines at the Tin Can; the final Boys & Girls at El Dorado featuring Falcons, Adam Salter, Kayne Asada and Jason Waterfalls; Still Ill plays a free show at Seven Grand for Morrissey’s Birthday; 80s vs. ‘90s with DJs Gabe Vega and Saul takes over The Whistle Stop; Chris Lorezo and Boys Don’t Disco hit Bang Bang; and Neon Beat featuring the best and worst of the ‘80s is at Bar Pink.

On Sunday, Intervention at the Hard Rock Hotel features Nervo, and the Lafayette Pool Party has Rip Carson performing. Later that night, Anti-Nowhere League, TSOL and Riverboat Gamblers hit House of Blues; Red Fang headlines at Porter's Pub; All Them Witches, Desert Suns and Slow Seasons are at the Casbah; and Zero Boys play at Soda Bar.

Make it a safe weekend and I’ll see you on the dance floor.
