Trapping Gold at SoundDiego's SDMT Happy Hour

The two-day San Diego Music Thing kicks off Friday night at Bar Pink with Trap Gold and DJ Gabe Vega.

Officially, the SDMT starts Thursday evening at the Casbah with sets by local faves Dirty Gold and a headlining spot from Telekinesis. Then, on Friday, there are daytime performances at Bar Pink from our friends in Old Tiger, who played at August’s SoundDiego LIVE; Amy LaVere; Pigeon Collision; Midnight Rivals; and Grand Tarantula.

Then, at 6 p.m., after you’ve gone to panels at the Lafayette Hotel with such musical luminaries as Steve Poltz (the co-writer of Jewel’s hit “You Were Meant for Me”); Tim Mays of the Casbah; David Kennedy, who helps organize Angels & Airwaves' tours; and Jim Lindberg (ex-Pennywise); you’ll want to head back to the Pink for the hardest-working turntable artist in San Diego, Gabe Vega; and the latest project from Mikey Turi and his perennial sideman, Ryan Bohan: Trap Gold -- think of them as a kinder, gentler, more melodic Old In Out, with melodies -- dark pop with a hook-y hum.

SDMT Happy Hour admission is free with a SDMT badge and will feature, among other surprises, free Trumer Pils. How can you go wrong, really, with free beer?

At 8, you can stick around Bar Pink or head out to shows at a dozen other venues with such artists as Little Hurricane (12:30 at U-31); Hotel St. George (11 p.m. at the Tin Can); the Mattson 2 (9 p.m. at the Office); Nico Vega at 10:30 in the Mississippi Room at the Lafayette; the Silent Comedy at 11:45 at the Sunset Temple Room, which is also in the Lafayette; Miss Erika Davies at 9:25 at the Whistle Stop; Republic of Letters (9:05 at Queen Bees); Joanie Mendenhall & John Meeks and River City at Claire de Lune (10:35, 11:20), and Hyena at Eleven at 1 a.m.

Tired? We didn’t even talk about Saturday yet. For a full lineup of Friday and Saturdays events (including another set by Mikey Turi, with The Old In Out, at Eleven at 10:30 p.m.; and, among others, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dead Feather Moon, Rafter, Cuckoo Chaos and Jamuel Saxon at the Sunset Temple Room), click here.
