Tijuana's Goth-Pop Princess

Dani Shivers, Tijuana's emerging goth-pop princess, has given SoundDiego an exclusive preview of "Jinx," from her sophomore effort, which will be released in October. The song is almost Debbie Gibson-like but with a raw, unhinged edge to it laid over early Depeche Mode synth beats. If you were to ask Shivers, she'd describe it as “the death of innocence.”

Shivers's Twitter bio reads: “Toys, horror films, childhood, hypercuteness, dark alleys, nostalgia, night terrors, bedtime stories, witches, ghosts, death, candy, love and magic.” The "Casio Queen" from Tijuana is on a mission to save the vintage keyboard from extinction by collecting them from local flea markets – and forever memorializing its signature sounds in her songs.

“I could have a $300 keyboard or a $1,000 keyboard, or I could have my $5 keyboard, and I still have a really good song,” she says. “That’s what matters.”

You Shaffner is her real name, and she is all the way Tijuanera – born and raised. She admits to a troubled childhood, but has found sanctuary with her Casio. Shiver may offer grim lyrics but you can't help deny they are made sunshine bright by her childlike, melodic voice.

She will perform Oct. 6 at the Waco Music and Arts Festival in Torreon, Mexico.
