Sounds Like San Diego: October 12

The National return to San Diego for a long-awaited show at SDSU's Open Air Theatre

I understand how people get nostalgic for times gone by, but I'm not generally that person. I don't miss the '80s, I don't pine for the '90s, and I can't really remember anything significant in the aughts, either, but sometimes someone or something sneaks through the cracks of my heart. So I got to thinking about Matt Berninger and the National. I remember their early Casbah shows and how everyone in the room knew to hold on to the memories because it wouldn't be long before the band exploded. And they did. After their sold-out 2007 show at the Casbah, they came back in 2008 for sold-out shows at Spreckels. Years have passed, the band not only did that Grateful Dead comp but Matt had the side thing with El Vy, and when the National's new record was announced earlier this year, I know I wasn't the only one whose heart was bursting with joy. Tonight, the band plays the Open Air Theatre which is intimate enough to enjoy the band and also large enough to realize just how far this band has come. My heart just might explode. Around town, the Afghan Whigs play Belly Up (read the SoundDiego interview with the band here), Mutemath is at House of Blues, and John Maus plays a sold-out show at Soda Bar.
