For Pavement fans, Saturday is extra special, as the frontman has, over the past decade, stepped out as Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. The band returns to the Casbah for a sold out show, but what is even more spectacular about the night is the opening act, Speedy Ortiz. With their latest EP, Real Hair, a follow-up to full length Major Arcana, the band has solidified itself as indie-darlings, complete with a band of wordsmiths who've all but given up their respective academic careers to be on the road. This is the band's second time passing through San Diego, but we hope it isn't the last as it took a little time for San Diegans to realize the magic that is Speedy Ortiz. If you didn't grab a ticket, check out the Experimental Guitar lineup at Soda Bar or any of a number of other great shows. And just in case you hadn't heard, San Diego's smooth yacht-rock cover band, Yacht Party, has changed their name to Smooth Harbor Yacht Club and are slated to perform at House of Blues.
