There are some local bands who find it's best to lay low in the local market. Earthless and the Donkeys come to mind, only playing a couple hometown shows per year. Another one of those is Mattson 2. The surf-infused jazz duo play all year round, but only a couple of those shows happen here in San Diego, which is what makes their Friday night show at the Casbah one you don't want to miss. It's hard to hold them up as the show of the night, however, when you've got stiff competition, like Sonny & the Sunsets playing at Soda Bar or Holy Wave at the Hideout. Pretty great options, but even more still, with the Jacksons at the San Diego County Fair and "swangin'" rapper Jacquees at the Observatory. What it all boils down to is a great Friday night in San Diego, no matter where you go.
