La Jolla Athenaeum Spring Series presents Mingus Dynasty at the Scripps Research Institute on Monday, Jan. 22.

I have never felt smart enough to appreciate the nuances of jazz music, but when you have a partner who is a huge Charles Mingus fan, you pay attention when Mingus Dynasty come to town to play. Following his death, the Mingus Big Band and Mingus Dynasty continued to play, and the legacy of those groups take the stage at the Scripps Ranch Institute for La Jolla Athenaeum's Spring Series where they'll perform "Tijuana Moods." Meanwhile, at Soda Bar, folk singer Willy Tea Taylor brings his soft and sweet music (think Tallest Man on Earth or a less whispery Iron and Wine), and at the Casbah, Quel Bordel lead a local lineup.
