Sounds Like San Diego: Dec. 24

It's Christmas Eve, and while most people are hanging out around the yule log with family and friends, there's a Christmas Eve tradition that might be coming to an end. The annual Exile on Kettner Blvd. shows, organized for many years by Mario Escovedo of the Dragons, features a night of San Diego musicians getting together in numerous variations to perform Rolling Stones covers. If you've never been, it might not sound compelling, but believe me, if you feel even for a second that you need to get out on Wednesday, this is the place to be. It's hours of fun, usually with a three- to four-page setlist. Everyone lets loose, and it's always a great time. The night is totally free, but be cautioned ... the venue is usually at capacity by 10:30 or 11 p.m., so if you want to drop by, go early and have a ball.

Tuesday, Dec. 24:

  • Exile on Kettner Blvd. @ Casbah (free)
  • DJ John Phillips @ Humphreys Backstage Live
  • Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet @ Croce's
  • Subdvsn @ Winston's
  • Tomcat Courtney @ La Gran Tapa
  • High Tech Tuesdays @ Kava Lounge
