San Diego Music Scene Mourns Aretha Franklin

Many San Diegans turned to social media to share their grief over the loss of the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin

Many locals turned to social media to share their grief over the loss of R&B legend and the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin, who passed away Thursday morning.

Franklin, who sang with peerless style on such classics as "Natural Woman," "Think," "Chain of Fools," "I Say a Little Prayer" and her signature song, "Respect," stood as a cultural icon around the globe. Publicist Gwendolyn Quinn told the Associated Press through a family statement that Franklin died Thursday, Aug. 16, at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit.

The family added: "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds."

The San Diego music community took to Facebook and Twitter to share their reactions to the sad news.
