Get ready to schlep across San Diego County, because the first 2018 San Diego Music Thing workshop will be taking place in Oceanside. But there's good incentive -- it's free.
This year, the San Diego Music Foundation is putting on a series of free, all-ages workshops and panels to help independent artists understand the music industry.
The first workshop will take place on June 9 at Cinematic Arts & Sound (302 Oceanside Blvd.) from 2-4 p.m. with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. This event will be tailored to musicians looking to license their music to television shows, movies, video games and more.
Industry experts will discuss how licensing works, what it is, which songs are most likely to be synced and how to negotiate music use and compensation.
While the music festival details have yet to be announced, a second workshop has already been set for Aug. 25 at ChuckAlek Biergarten in North Park (3139 University Ave.). That talk will discuss publishing, copyrighting, registering with a Performance Rights Organization, and understanding how income is generated from published music.
So, if you're looking to get a leg up on the competition and take your music from a local level to a national level while getting a little return on your investment, then you'll want to pay attention to this year's incredibly accessible San Diego Music Thing.
