Rockin' August Nights

FM94/9 deejay Tim Pyles makes his show picks for the month of August

August looks good for concerts big and small, with several alternative rock juggernauts swinging through our fair city. I promise to be at most, if not all, of these shows unless I am working on the radio. Either I will see you out and about, or you can hear me on FM94/9 Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. -- both sound good to me! I also just started booking bands for Food Truck Fridays at Silo, an outdoor venue within Maker's Quarter. Every Friday in August, you'll find  food trucks, fashion trucks, music and adult beverages from 4:30 p.m. until sunset. It's right off the 94 freeway going into downtown (the address is 753 15th St. -- right across from Monkey Paw) and you should definitely check it out!

Aug. 1: Food Truck Fridays w/Jimmy Ruelas 6-8 p.m. Jimmy is an old soul and his music reflects that.

Aug. 2: - Weezer at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The band is back and they have a new album forthcoming.  First single is called "Back To The Shack."

Aug. 3: Listen to me on the radio on FM94/9 or go see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at Viejas Arena with Steve Winwood. Rock legends!

Aug. 4: Casbah tonight with Midnight Clergy, Sound Lupus, the Slashes and Scruffles doing two sets in the Atari Lounge. Support local music -- that I booked!

Aug. 5: Arcade Fire, Spoon and Dan Deacon at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. This is going to be a fun night!

Aug. 6: Arctic Monkeys at SDSU's Open Air Theater. One of my favorite bands -- I can't wait.

Aug. 7: Courtney Barnett at the Casbah. Great Australian singer/songwriter.

Aug. 8: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Casbah. But start your night at Food Truck Fridays with Spero from 6-8 p.m.

Aug. 9:  It's my high school reunion! I graduated from La Jolla High School in...

Aug. 10: Listen to the Local 94/9 on FM94/9 at 9pm or go see Crocodiles at the Casbah or Diarrhea Planet at Soda Bar; either choice would make me happy!

Aug. 11: Chill Clinton, Privet and Saint Diego at the Casbah.  I booked these local bands, you should come and support 'em.

Aug. 12: I am taking a night off, unless you have a better idea. Comment below and let me know where I should be!

Aug. 13: Wunder Wunder at U-31.  Another Aussie artist with a great song called "Coastline."

Aug. 14: Deep Purple at Harrah's Resort Southern California. It's a drive, but worth it -- it's Deep Purple!

Aug. 15: Food Truck Fridays with Pocket from 6-8 p.m. Pocket has a new album, so come hear the new songs.

Aug. 16: The Sonics at the Irenic with Mrs. Magician. One of the first garage rock bands! Plus the return of Mrs. Magician!

Aug. 17: Grouplove, Portugal the Man and Tokyo Police Club for the Honda Civic Tour at SDSU's Open Air Theater. Solid three-band line up of today's top alt-rockers!

Aug. 18: The Fresh and Onlys with the Wild Wild Wets at the Casbah. Psych rock at the Casbah and you are invited!

Aug. 19: Quilt, Cosmonauts and Cotillon at Casbah. Don't be scared if you don't know who the bands are, just go to the show.

Aug. 20: The Zombies at House Of Blues with Mrs. Magician. Another legendary band and another chance to see Mrs. Magician; not bad for a band that broke up.

Aug. 21: Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden and Cold Cave at Sleep Train Amphitheatre.  The '90s are back!

Aug. 22: Benjamin Booker at Soda Bar -- check out his song, "Violent Shiver." Don't forget about Food Truck Fridays with the Midnight Pine playing from 6-8 p.m.

Aug. 23: Built To Spill at the Irenic. The Irenic is a church, but not when it's a music venue...

Aug. 24: Jacuzzi Boys and Devon Williams at Casbah. A night of rock & roll!

Aug. 25:  Broncho at Soda Bar. It's pronounced "Bron-Cho".

Aug. 26: Leopold and His Fiction at the Casbah with the rock and the roll you like!

Aug. 27: B.B. King at Humphrey's By The Bay.  See him now before it's too late, but until then never believe a post that says he has passed.

Aug. 28: Men Without Hats at the Belly Up. You can dance if you want to!

Aug. 29: Local rock & roll with Shake Before Us, the New Kinetics, Stereotypes and Schitzophonics at the Casbah. Also Food Truck Fridays with Todo Mundo from 6-8 p.m.

Aug. 30: Summer Nationals Tour with the Offspring, Pennywise, Bad Religion, the Vandals and Stiff Little Fingers at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. A punk rock party!

Aug. 31: The Local 94/9 at 9 p.m. on FM94/9 -- with me!

Wow what a month to look forward to!  So many shows and so little time!  I hope I see you at Food Truck Fridays -- and thanks for reading!
