With the 2019 San Diego Music Awards right around the corner (the annual ceremony takes place at House of Blues on March 11), we decided to have a conversation with a few of this year's nominees about their predictions on the upcoming award show's biggest categories. After all, who better to make the call on possible winners than some of the very same folks who could possibly take home trophies this year? Now up for discussion: Song of the Year (check out previous discussions on Best New Artist and Best Live Performer).
SONG OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
- Earthless - "Gifted By the Wind"
- Hot Snakes - "Six Wave Hold Down"
- Jason Mraz - "Have It All"
- P.O.D. - "Listening for the Silence"
- Slightly Stoopid - "Too Late" (Stick Figure Remix)
- The Frights - "Over It"
- The Petty Saints - "Troublemaker"
Matthew Burke (whose band, Mittens, is nominated for Best Pop): The Frights, "Over It." I shared a bill with them about six years ago at U-31 when they had to wait outside until they played because they weren't 21 yet.
Larry Doran (whose band, Trouble in the Wind, is nominated for Best Country/Americana and Best Country/Americana Album): Hot Snakes, "Six Wave Hold Down." Gets my vote for its pure punk energy with cool retro riffs and quick melody.
Parker Edison (whose group, the Parker Meridien, is nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album): Song of the year should go to P.O.D. [for "Listening for the Silence"]. They’ve basically been touring internationally for the last 18 months.
Shane Hall (nominated for Best Singer/Songwriter): Jason Mraz, "Have It All." Mr. Mraz has proven a hundred times over he is a master of invoking feels and conveying love and positivity in his message. This song personified that to a T. Sorry other nominees, it’s tough to tangle with Mr. Mraz and his songsmith-ing.
