May the Pyles Be With You

M.I.A., Blood Red Shoes and Band of Skulls are just some of Tim Pyles' picks for May

Our cup runneth over in San Diego with good shows and I have chosen one for each night of the month. The choices are definitely difficult on some nights, but I'm here to help you out and make your life easier. So take a look and mark some stuff down on your calendar! Local, national or international -- it don't matter -- support music! It's just like art!

May 4: Legendary Orange County cholo punks Manic Hispanic play the Casbah with locals the Fink Bombs and the Homeless Sexuals.

May 5: Celebrate Cinco De Mayo! Drink tequila and use a cab, Uber or Lyft to get home safely to rock another day!

May 6: Formed in the UK in 1986, Loop reunites and will be playing the Austin Psych Fest and San Diego's Soda Bar with Tar Halos, Brainticket DJ's and Operation: Mindblow Liquid Light Show.

May 7: '80s band Visage was supposed to play the Casbah and I was very excited about it but they postponed it until later in the year -- so maybe go see that odd rapper Riff Raff at the House Of Blues.

May 8: Maryjane's Underground with locals Amigo, Pleasure Fix and a complimentary cocktail hour courtesy of 619 Vodka -- but you need to RSVP here.

May 9: Shoegaze/Noisepop band the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Fear of Men and Ablebody at the Casbah.

May 10: Indie alternative dance rockers We Are Scientists and Paws the Casbah.

May 11: SubPop recording artists Rose Windows, Wild Wild Wets and Jeffertitti's Nile at Soda Bar.

May 12: The Steinbacks, Sleeping Ghost and International Dipshits at the Casbah. It's Anti-Monday League and I booked it!

May 13: LA Hip-Hop meets San Diego Hip-Hop with People Under The Stairs, Joint Response, DJ Gar Gar, NN$ at the Casbah.

May 14: Big Scary, Say Hi and PRGRM at the Casbah. One Australian band, one from Seattle and the opener is from San Diego!

May 15: The Cave Singers and the Dabbers at the Casbah. The Cave Singers feature former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves.

May 16: The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger aka the Ghost, heads into the Casbah and features a gentleman named Sean Lennon.

May 17: Iggy Azalea at the House Of Blues. Australian recording artist and model who will slay you with her style.

May 18: All Them Witches, Desert Suns and Slow Seasons at the Casbah. This is for the people who enjoy Stoner Rock, but don't let that scare you.

May 19: Band Of Skulls and Deap Vally at the House Of Blues. Girls in both bands here and they rock!

May 20: The return of our very own Nickel Creek with the Secret Sisters at the Balboa Theater. Get the new Nickel Creek album A Dotted Line -- out now!

May 21: The Unlikely Candidates are a new buzz band from Texas and will play with Wild Party at the Soda Bar.

May 22: The Rosalyns, the Diddley Daddies, the Grim Imperials and Two Wolves at the Casbah. The Rosalyns are the coolest all-girl group you will ever see!

May 23: The Burning of Rome, Hell or Highwater, Eukaryst and Fairy Bones at the Casbah. It's a CD release party for the Burning Of Rome's new album Year Of The Ox and everybody should go!

May 24: Vacationer at the Irenic. The Nu-Hula band from from Philly has a new album out June 24 called Relief.

May 25: Punk rock legends Angelic Upstarts, Peter & the Test Tube Babies and the Generators at Soda Bar.

May 26: Blood Red Shoes and Radkey at the Casbah. The last time Blood Red Shoes played the Casbah, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine showed up. She just happened to be headlining in town the next day -- so you probably won't see her there this time around.

May 27: In the Valley Below, Mercy Beat, Tiger & the Teller at the Casbah. Should be a groovy show with cool sounds.

May 28: Eagulls, Ditches and Twin Peaks at the Soda Bar. Eagulls post-punk sounds will have you begging for more! I love this band and can't wait for the show!

May 29: Alt-rock band Birds Of Tokyo at the Hard Rock Hotel Club 207. An Australian band poised for big things!

May 30: M.I.A. at SOMA. She is the bomb! I will be at this show for sure!

May 31: The return of local legends Kill Holiday and I Wish I at the Soda Bar.

Thanks for your time and I hope I piqued your interest on a few things. Your mom says you stay inside too much, playing video games or larping -- so get off your hiney and join me at one of our fine venues supporting music in all its forms! Do it doctor, and you will feel better!
