Turn Over a New Leaf

Happy February. Another good month for music fans, with new releases from Album Leaf (A Chorus of Storytellers, on Sub Pop) and the Soft Pack -- originally the Muslims -- (S/T, on Kemado). San Diego bands making names for themselves -- something we love here at M-Theory!

Malachi's Ugly Side of Love gets my two thumbs way up. I've been rocking this in the store and love it. It's got that raw '60s garage rock sound mixed with clever production and catchy hooks, but not in the pop sense, just in the straight bada** sense.

Other great new releases:

  • Midlake: The Courage of Others (Bella Union)
  • Yeasayer: Odd Blood (Secretly Canadian)
  • Brunettes: Paper Doll (Lil' Chiefs Records)
  • Kouyate, Bassekou & Ngoni: I Speak Fula (Sub Pop)
  • Malachai: Ugly Side of Love (Domino)
  • Justin Townes Earle: Midnight at the Movies  (Bloodshot)
  • Owen Pallett (formerly Final Fantasy): Heartland (Domino)
  •

Also, a late bloomer: Surfer Blood's Astro Coast (Kanine) is now in stock on CD and LP!

Remember, Langhorne Slim on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Catch a free set here at the store, then follow us all over to the Casbah to keep the night rockin!
